red cabbage with apples

December 31st, 2008

You possibly will not believe you can lose weight while on a eating plan which includes red cabbage with apples but it is achievable. The key is to not eat red cabbage with apples or other high calorie vegetables, sauerkraut every day but in moderation.

For instance, I allow myself moderately high calorie food once per week. I eat a low calorie diet for 6 days of the week, say 1500 to 1600 calories a day, and then 1 day, I eat what I please – within moderation of course.

I have been sticking to this diet for the last 2 weeks and it has enabled me to lose 5 kilos. I have not changed my exercise routine or taken any supplements or diet aids. I have just been conscious of what I eat on most days and then eat whatever I want one day per week.

I also believe it makes things easier if you have a little support when dieting and for that I joined the Biggest Loser club. They have several tools to help you monitor your progress and achieve your goals.

Red Cabbage with Apples

This sweet-sour sauce is what the Pennsylvania Dutch brought with them from Germany to the United States hundreds of years ago.

1 large onion, cut in half and thinly sliced in long slivers
2 tablespoons vegetable oil
1 red cabbage, shredded
1 medium-size tart apple, peeled and shredded
1 teaspoon caraway seed (optional)
2 tablespoons brown sugar
1/2 cup red wine vinegar
1 cup water
Salt, to taste
1 clove minced garlic

Heat the oil. Add onion and cook until soft. Add cabbage and apple. Stir often for 5 minutes, then stir in caraway seed, brown sugar, red wine vinegar, water, salt and garlic. Bring to a boil; reduce heat and simmer until cabbage is very tender and most of the liquid has evaporated. Serve hot!
