feijoada

May 23rd, 2008

You may not accept that you could lose weight while on a eating plan which includes feijoada but it can happen. It is fundamental to not eat feijoada or other high calorie beef/pork/lamb/veal every day but in moderation.

For instance, I allow myself these kinds of food one meal per week. I eat a healthy diet for 6 days of the week, say 1400 to 2000 calories per day, and then on the last day, I eat what I please – without going crazy of course.

I have been eating like this for the last 4 weeks and it has enabled me to lose 5 kilos. I have not accelerated my exercise routine or taken any supplements or diet food. I have just been conscious of what I eat on most days and then eat whatever I like one day a week.

On my one day off per week, I tend to eat south american food. I never thought I could lose 5 kilos while eating south american meals but am very pleased to see it can work. If you would like to try some south american food, I advise you make feijoada which is one of my favourite south american recipes.

Feijoada (Black Bean Stew – Brazil)

Black Beans and Meat is the national dish of Brazil. Although usually involving several days for the preparation and traditionally calling for pig feet, ears and tail, this version is made with readily-available pork cuts. Serve this with hot white rice, sliced oranges and sliced white onion.

1 pound dried black beans
Water (to cover beans)
6 cups water
1 pound boneless ham, cut into 3/4-inch cubes
1 pound boneless pork loin, cut into 3/4-inch cubes
3/4 pound hot Italian sausage, sliced into 1-inch pieces
3/4 pound smoked sausage, sliced into 1-inch pieces
1 pint cherry tomatoes, stemmed
1 onion, peeled and chopped
1 teaspoon red pepper flakes
6 cloves garlic, peeled and minced
1/8 teaspoon orange zest

Preheat oven to 350 degrees F.

In a large Dutch oven, combine beans, the 6 cups of water and remaining ingredients. Bring to a boil, skimming if necessary. Cover and transfer to oven. Bake 1 1/2 hours; remove cover and bake another 30 minutes, stirring occasionally.

Serve immediately, with cornbread, if desired. Or allow to cool slightly, then cover and refrigerate overnight.

Remove any fat from surface. Reheat Feijoada slowly.

Serves 12.

You can change the recipe to make it quite a bit healthier or with less calories as this can aid you to lose 5 kilos rapidly. It was successful for me and could aid you to lose weight as well.
